No one gives you a roadmap for this part. College tours, scholarship apps, and acceptance letters make it look like progress, but underneath all the paperwork is a heart full of quiet questions: Will he thrive? Will he be safe? Will he make good choices? Did I do enough? The unknown is unsettling because we can’t control it—and for moms who’ve spent years steering the ship, letting go of the wheel can feel like drifting.
But I’ve learned that fear loses power when we take action, even in the smallest ways. Teaching them practical skills—budgeting, laundry, how to make a decent meal—helps. So does naming the values that matter and reminding ourselves that resilience isn’t built in certainty; it’s built in trying. Preparing them for the real world is one part of the work. Trusting them to step into it is the other.
I won’t pretend the fear disappears. Some nights it still shows up, uninvited. But I’m learning that uncertainty doesn’t mean we’ve failed—it just means faith is taking the lead. We may not know what’s next, but we know who they are. And we know the love we’ve given doesn’t stay behind when they leave. It goes with them.
Be sure to read “Letter To Mamas”. It may be just what your heart needs today.
